The repair is only temporary. The diagnostics confirmed that the problem is not caused by the carburettor. The carburettor was adjusted to the highest possible CO2 value as this gives the best - combustion.

Primary ignition with original coil - defective ignition (7726/2)

Whilst the other sparks have a burn time around 0.7 ms (which is quite short), the defective spark is only 0.1 ms and gives almost no arc. Further we don't know at this point where the arc is occuring. It doesn't even have to be at the spark plug electrodes.

Tail pipe emissions (7726/3)

CO2 was 5.6 % - adjusted to 9.7 %
CO was 9.2 % - adjusted to 4.7 - 5.2%
O2 was 6 % - adjusted to about 3.5 %
HC was 1600 ppm - after adjustment dropped to 1200 ppm

Second problem - low quality switching of primary circuit (7726/4)

The primary circuit intermittently opens in one step and also in two steps with different openning periods. This has to be inspected and fixed.

Overview of occurrences (7726/5)

This is how often a low quality spark is present. The engine is bucking slightly at increased idle speed and the sparks are intermittently good while the rest is low quality ignition or misfire.

Current model of Renault 6V ignition coil (7726/6)

Renault uses in series connected ignition coils. So this coil has enough power to give a sufficiently strong spark but is not designed for such long dwell angles of the old style mechanical points distributor. The coil would overheat. Despite this we can see that the problem is the distributor.

Advance and engine compression (7726/7)

The individual cylinder pressures are the same on all cylinders.

New distributor - new setting (7726/8)

The owner brought in a different distributor that had to be installed correctly.

The engine started on the first turn of the starter. Advance was adjusted. Now we can see that spark burning time has extended from 0.4 ms to 1.5 - 3.0 ms!

Note: This distributor is not the correct type for this vehicle because the the rotation direction is opposite and thus the centrifugal advance regulation is also opposite to what it should be. Nevertheless this distributor proved that mechanical play in the distributor drive system has no influence on the engine misfire.

Primary ignition - all cylinders at idle (Paradebild) (7726/9)

This new distributor has good working points and has no play in the distributor drive shaft. There is no problem on the sparks of this recording compared with the original distributor.

Primary ignition - acceleration sample signal pattern (7726/10)

No distributor points problems can be seen even during acceleration.

Advance set to 40 ° before TDC - temporary compromise (7726/11)

As already mentioned before this distributor doesn't belong to this vehicle. Since the engine works much better compared to the original it was decided to leave it in and the owner will try to find the correct distributor type.
