German trade magazine KFZ-Betrieb (sešit 8/2008) has published in the February professional supplement "SERVICETECHNIKER" (service technician), our first 12 page story about advanced diagnostic methods using the oscilloscope. The oscilloscope is returning back to the workshop in digital form, with more channels a with memory. The diagnostic possibilities have expanded considerably, compared to his "analog brother" 25 years ago... KFZ-Betrieb writes about this:
Onboard diagnostic systems often work incorrectly: Systems interfere with each other and this is not included in the repair strategy, faults that occur are misinterpreted because their values are not measured but only calculated or the technician is guided during the fault diagnosis in such a way, where the human factor is not taken in to account. Many factors are responsible for this state, but the result is always the same:
Very often the guided fault diagnosis methods are not leading to the target, that is to clearly determine the fault cause and thus to repair the fault quickly and easily. Now we can have long discussions and disputes about the causes of this state. But this will not push the mechanics and technicians in the workshops to improved performance. This is then generating inquiries about alternative methods, and they exist. It is the current multichannel digital storage oscilloscope. With this equipment a trained expert can visualize what many diagnostic protocols inhibit, what the block of measured values only assumes and what cannot be found with the preset static help guides. The following article is showing an example of a Czech company, that is specialized in diagnostics and that is successfully using these new methods for tracing faults. You will find descriptions of real life faults, where the series diagnostics failed and the reasons behind, why it failed.
