A single LOG recording saved a lot of money and two months of trouble

The diagnostic methods that we use break all the prejudice that car faults are generally "problematic". Yes, they can be but it depends who for. We are not specifying which workshops because the tools we use to diagnose problems quickly and reliably are nothing unique and are available in every professional workshop.  Nobody can make excuses that this cannot be done in their workshop. If they do say this then they are too negligent to learn and use modern diagnostic methods using Log recordings, Multitests and Fault location. These three steps can be applied to everything that has wheels.

To be honest we weren't particularly eager to take up this case. From the customer's dramatic case description we gained the impression that this case isn't going to be straight forward diagnostics but more of a research case due to the facts of how many people have already worked on the car. Further, the customer has already invested quite a large sum for the repairs over the last two months and the fault diagnostics haven't made any progress since the beginning.

The case on our FCD website has about 80 comments with the general view that all the diagnostic and repair attempts to date have generated so many issues that it will be almost impossible to return the car to its original condition and if yes it's going to cost a lot of money.

The following customer's comment on the FCD website offended my trade pride: "I wish you lots of success in your work and many customers with cars that you know how to repair."

This was the last straw after which I said that I will repair the car free of charge! Now after 35 minutes the car diagnostic steps are finished, including refuelling because the car arrived with a completely empty fuel tank.

The complete case is fully described in a separate story (the link is shown below).

The fault symptom reduces engine power, the car is slowing down (2030/1)

The owner is confronted with this message on the display for over two months. The cars symptoms are heavy exhaust smoke, frequent regenerations, loss of power and the same DTC with the following text "Airflow sensor - unplausible signal" is stored repeatedly.

Visible smoke from the exhaust when the car was started on the tow truck (2030/2)

Chevrolet Orlando has visited several workshops over the last two months. The turbocharger was replaced, the DPF filter was replaced two times. The current DPF filter on the car has a problem and is leaking.

A damaged filter in the cars boot (2030/3)

Image of the original DPF filter from the rear. The heat damage of the filter was caused by something that all the previous workshop repair attempts have failed to diagnose. Its a paradox that even if 10 DPF filters, 10 turbochargers and even 10 Airflow sensor as indicated by the DTC were replaced and it doesn't matter if OEM or not all the DPF filters would end up in the same condition. This is because the main fault is after 2 months sill present on the car.

DTC is set together with reduced engine power (2030/4)

This DTC is pointing to an abnormal signal of the airflow sensor and sets only after the car exceeds a speed of 80 km/h. The fault was not fixed by replacing the DPF filter or the turbocharger. After driving a short distance the fault reappears again and again,

Initial scan of all the modules promised a number of problems (2030/5)

Every single module accompanied with a red colour signalled that at least one DTC is stored in the memory. This is how the red coloured modules looked on the display. All the DTC were trivial faults that appear due to longterm parking and low battery voltage.

This wasn't the only problem (2030/6)

Not only did the car lose power but it arrived on a tow truck almost without any fuel.

A single test drive with a LOG recording revealed one typical fault (2030/7)

It is surprising to find out that how all the previous technicians before our analysis that took 35 minutes were looking at the fault but couldn't see it and replaced many expensive parts when the fault is clear even without opening the bonnet.

Now it was time to open the bonnet and look for the source of the fault with confidence (2030/8)

It was clear where the fault was and what was causing all the problems. We have to admit that we an acoustic camera (ACAM) from AVL to pinpoint the fault and this saved us at least one of extra work.

This wasn't caused by a weasel... (2030/9)

This wasn't the cause we only needed to remove the cap for diagnostic purposes...

Before the car had time to dry after being towed the cause of the fault was diagnosed (2030/10)

The cars registration plate was covered assuming that it will take at least a day to determine all the diagnostic procedures. But there was almost nothing to do...
